CUMMING, GA —Forsyth County's Congressman was the guest speaker at the July monthly meeting of the Cumming Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America.

Rep. Rob Woodall briefed the vets about issues relating to Department of Veterans Affairs health care. Woodall acknowledged the department still has issues related to both access to and quality of care. He noted that congress has acted in a rare bipartisan fashion on issues to help military veterans and over the last five years has increased VA spending by nearly 33 percent.

"Not because we're throwing good money after bad, but because we are asking more of them," he said.

The Congressman said the recent Whistle Blower Protection Act is making it easier for the V-A to get rid of bad apples and making it easier for folks who are doing a good job to come forward without repercussions. He also touched on the recently approved Mission Act enabling veterans to seek medical care in the private sector when there are long delays in getting appointments at the V-A.

On the thorny issues of illegal immigration, Woodall told the gathered veterans that the pathway forward must include cooperation by both parties. He said he believes President Trump will sign an immigration bill that includes DACA, border security and fixes asylum rules and finally put the issue behind us for another generation. He said we must "reinforce the idea that we are a nation of laws and if you don't come here legally, there's not going to be a place for you."

Woodall is in his final term as the 7th District Representative as he is not seeking reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives.
